Seminal Moment in The Changing Character of Conflict: Ukraine’s All Drone Assault

In December 2024, Ukraine’s 13th National Guard Brigade, known as the “Khartiia” Brigade , executed a groundbreaking assault near Lyptsi in the Kharkiv region, marking the first documented instance of a fully robotic ground assault in modern warfare.

This operation involved a coordinated deployment of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and first-person view (FPV) drones, effectively targeting and destroying Russian military positions without direct human involvement on the battlefield.

The assault featured various robotic systems, including ground robots equipped with machine guns and aerial drones for surveillance, mine-laying, and explosive attacks. Controlled remotely by operators from a safe distance, these machines worked in unison to penetrate enemy defenses, neutralize threats, and pave the way for subsequent infantry advances.

“What took days to plan took just one or two hours to execute. The assault took place along a heavily fortified Russian position near a large forest. The simultaneous waves of ground and aerial drones caught the Russians off guard, causing panic. While aerial drone attacks are common on the front lines, the coordinated use of ground drones was unexpected.”

This innovative approach aimed to minimize human casualties by assigning high-risk tasks to machines, addressing both the imperative to protect soldiers and the challenges posed by manpower constraints. Despite facing obstacles such as terrain difficulties and electronic interference, the operation demonstrated the potential of unmanned systems in modern combat scenarios.
